In October I will be traveling with SkillCorps/Global Autism Project to Kigali, Rwanda. The purpose of the trip is to assist a local school, Silver Bells, with starting an early intervention program for children with Autism. I will be working side-by-side with local teachers and other professionals to teach the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA is the only scientifically supported treatment for autism, and Silver Bells will be the only center in the area to provide this type of treatment. Unfortunatly, in some areas of Africa, autism is still seen as being caused by a curse, sins of the family, or demon possession. Due to lack of education and treatment, children affected by the disorder may not be allowed in public and sometimes even kept in chains at home. SkillCorps teams are made up of skilled professionals and Autistic self-advocates working in the field of autism education. Our teams are trained and prepared to support educators, leaders, parents, and advocates working in their own communities. SkillCorps is an innovative travel and training program which encourages collaboration, cultural exchange and understanding, with a focus on sustainable impact. We believe that local people will lead the way in activating acceptance and opportunity for people with autism in their own communities, and our SkillCorps teams are there to support them every step of the way! In order to be able to join the team and travel in October, I need to fundraise $5000 total, and $2500 by June 8th. Any help is greatly appreciated, and please share to any and all social media platforms. Thank you so much for your time!!
