Each day I go to work, I get the privilege of providing support and assistance to children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. I use applied behavior analysis (ABA) to increase socially significant behaviors (e.g., communication) and decrease challenging behaviors (e.g., tantrums, non-compliance, problem behavior). Without a doubt, I love my job and the ability to help these families.
I was recently presented with another opportunity to spread the joy of my job to those less fortunate, and that is through SkillCorps with the Global Autism Project. Their mission is to "promote the acceptance and integration of individuals with autism worldwide by training communities in culturally relevant, sustainable practices." I've been invited to join this wonderful organization to volunteer in Nigeria for two weeks in February 2020. I will travel with a team of ABA professionals and we will work with the local autism center providing training and empowering local educators to work with individuals affected by ASD. This opportunity will help children and families integrate and be better accepted into their communities and receive services they wouldn’t otherwise receive.
I am reaching out to all of my friends and family to request their support in this mission so I can continue helping those in need of these services. All donations go to funding this trip and will be greatly appreciated by myself and those families who will benefit from our work.
Where do the donations go?
About 20% of the $5,000 goes towards the following: accommodation in Brooklyn, NY, during my 2-day orientation before going to Nigeria. Two meals per day in NY during orientation and one per meal day while in Nigeria for two weeks. Transportation to the NY airport and work-related transportation in Nigeria. The trained, skilled, and knowledgeable leader who will lead the trip; overall trip arrangements, and travel management.
The remaining 80% of the $5,000 goes directly to maintaining the existing global autism centers in keeping their centers staffed and running.
How will I be contributing financially?
I will pay for transportation to NY, flight to and from Nigeria, and my VISA into Nigeria as well as my remaining meals that the fundraising doesn't cover, and mandatory excursions.
Thank you for your considerate donation! It is greatly appreciated!
